Project Title: AI-Based Orientation Support Device for the Visually Impaired
In the context where current orientation-support technologies remain limited, traditional devices such as white canes or ultrasonic sensors typically provide only one-dimensional distance alerts (“near/far”) without contextual or spatial information. The lack of three-dimensional perception makes it difficult for visually impaired users to form a clear understanding of their surroundings, increasing mobility risks and limiting independence in daily life.
Addressing this challenge, the team developed a smart wearable device that functions as a spatial cognition assistant. Unlike conventional computer vision systems that focus solely on object labeling, the proposed solution is built on 3D spatial reconstruction from a monocular camera, combined with object relationship analysis and natural language interpretation. The system delivers adaptive feedback and specific navigation guidance, enabling visually impaired users to move from passively reacting to alerts toward actively controlling their movement within real-world environments.
